Sinus Problems, Sinus Issues, Nasal Passage, Decongestants, Sinus Symptoms, Sinus InfectionSinus problems are very common. Those living in the USA spend $5.8 billion every year to treat this condition. Sinus problems are caused by the fluid not draining properly out of the sinuses. This leads to a number of health problems such as colds, tiredness, and increased allergies.

There are various forms of treatment available. Nasal steroid sprays, decongestants, neti pots, and herbal remedies are just a few. Some 500,000 people every year resort to surgery to help alleviate their symptoms.

However, researchers have discovered that many sinus issues are misdiagnosed and are actually caused by a problem with the head and neck. Where does this information come from?

Recent studies reveal that people often have fatigue and pain in connection with their sinus problems. A group of 297 sinus patients reported that 22% of them also had unexplained chronic fatigue, while 11% had unexplained chronic pain, and 9% had both. What did they find was the cause? It is linked to misalignments in the upper neck.

How Upper Cervical Misalignment Occur

The connective tissue can be damaged when someone goes through an accident or has a head or neck injury. The upper neck is most vulnerable to problems because it is the most flexible. That is good when it comes to turning the head, but not so great when it comes to experiencing a misalignment.

A misalignment in the C1 or C2 (the uppermost vertebrae of the neck) puts pressure on the brainstem and causes it to no longer function properly. One effect of that is dysfunction of cortisol release. This can cause chronic fatigue and sinus problems.

When a medical doctor, a psychiatrist, and a chiropractor teamed up to study this, they found that when the upper neck was put back into proper position, the patient’s overall health improved. Their function in social situations was also better. Cortisol reading normalized after a 6 month period. This resulted in a decrease of sinus, chronic fatigue, and chronic pain symptoms.

Upper cervical chiropractors are specially trained to detect and correct the misalignments of the upper neck. Adjustments may just lead to a happier and healthier life.
