Anything that affects a person’s vision is referred to as a visual disturbance. Some may have a specific condition such as diplopia (seeing double), exophthalmos (bulging eyes), or pink eye. With other patients, it may be a symptom of another disorder like Meniere’s disease, migraines, or vertigo.
With these types of problems, it can be difficult to find a treatment that works. It may require a visit to a medical doctor, who may refer the patient to an ophthalmologist or a neurologist or both. When the patient has additional health problems, these conditions become even harder to treat.
However, an optometrist has been noticing a trend in his practice when it comes to vision problems. One example is of a twelve-year-old girl who was up-to-date on all of her routine visual check-ups. She began seeing poorly all of a sudden. When she mentioned that she had sustained a neck injury while playing basketball, the optometrist recommended that she visit a chiropractor. A misalignment of the upper bones of the neck was discovered, and she was given an adjustment to correct this. When she returned to the optometrist, her vision was back to normal.
Upper cervical chiropractors are very familiar with cases of this sort. Patients suffering from Meniere’s disease, vertigo, and migraines are finding help through our care. We specialize in realigning the C1 and C2 vertebrae. These bones are sensitive to injury, and they play a vital role in the operation of the nervous system as it relates to the function of the body. The brainstem passes through the area of the neck in which the C1 and C2 bones lie. In this same area, nerves that control the way the eyes work are found. It makes sense, then, that a misalignment here could easily affect a person’s vision.
The above-mentioned optometrist reported thirty cases of people complaining of vision problems and then reporting improvement after seeing a chiropractor. This is definitely a trend worth looking into.
