Vertigo is the feeling that the things around a person or the person themselves are spinning. If someone visits his medical doctor to find help for this sensation, the doctor will probably recommend a prescription or over-the-counter drug. It may be surprising to realize that there are fifty different drugs that can treat vertigo and dizziness!
While these may help to control the symptoms of vertigo, it is important to keep in mind that they come with a variety of different, generally unwanted side-effects. Many are now desiring to try more natural treatments. However, they are skeptical as to whether or not these really work.
Research on Vertigo and Upper Chiropractic Care
Dr. Michael Burcon has done intensive research on how the upper neck can affect the body. He discovered a link between the upper cervical spine and conditions such as vertigo, tinnitus, and Meniere’s disease, among others. When a misalignment was detected in the atlas bone of the neck (the top, C1 vertebra) in patients that have suffered from whiplash, the end result was the above-mentioned conditions. The reason for this is that the upper cervical spine is located at the base of the skull, where it meets the neck and a misalignment here causes lesions that affect the Eustachian tube of the ear, and balance is therefore disrupted.
It may be hard to believe, but dizziness or vertigo may not manifest itself for up to 15 years or more after the initial trauma to the head and neck that caused the misalignment. This is due to the fact that the original misalignment may have been too small to cause a problem. However, left untreated, the condition only worsens as the person ages.
What Can Be Done?
The head is very heavy, weighing up to 14 pounds. The slightest misalignment of the upper neck vertebrae can put pressure on the spine eventually leading to damage. This shows the importance of addressing health conditions, like vertigo, as soon as they arise.
Thankfully, we are trained to find a patient’s misalignment and work with him to correct it. This can improve current problems and prevent any from forming in the future.
