Headache, Migraine, Head Pain, SeizuresMigralepsy and Occipital Seizures

Last time we talked about a phenomenon called migralepsy, which manifests itself as epileptic seizures after a migraine attack. We also talked about how epileptic seizures that follow migraines may not be signs of migralepsy, rather they may be signs of occipital seizures.

Many of the symptoms are similar, so it is easy to confuse the two. We know you want to know more about your pain, and that’s why it’s important that you seek the care of an upper cervical chiropractor, so they can determine whether you suffer from migralepsy, occipital seizures, or if your migraines trigger your seizures or the other way around.

Though, first, since we talked about Migralepsy in length last week, this week we want to make you aware of some of the symptoms of Occipital Seizures.

 Symptoms of Occipital Seizures

  • Visual hallucinations
  • Eye jerking to one side
  • Visual illusions
  • Blindness
  • Vision loss
  • Sensation of eye movements
  • Pain in the eye
  • Rapid side to side eye movement
  • Eye fluttering
  • Image repetition (visual imagery is repeated)

Migralepsy vs. Occipital Seizures

There are similarities between migralepsy and occipital seizures, but there are slight differences. A second factor to consider is the onset of aura before an epileptic seizure similar to aura that might occur before a migraine.

Both of these phenomenon occur due to the abnormality of electrical signal sent to the muscles via the nerves. The way to overcome either of these conditions is to restore the body back to a state in which those electrical signals are sent to the muscles via the nerves normally.

That abnormal flow of electrical signals is frequently due to irritation the brain stem caused by a misalignment in the upper neck. To restore normal electrical signals within the brain is important that an upper cervical chiropractor examine your upper neck to determine if the misalignment is present that may be leading to this change in how the brain and body are communicating.
