What is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is potentially disabling disease that affects the brain, brainstem, and spinal cord. It involves the abnormal immune-mediated process that is directed against its own central nervous system. The immune system causes inflammation that damages the protective sheath that surrounds and insulates the nerve fibers. The damaged areas will develop scar tissues over the fibers. When myelin or nerve fibers are damaged or destroyed, messages from the brain, brainstem, and spinal cord to organ tissues are altered or stopped completely. When the message is slowed or blocked due to the nerve damage, it affects the control of the muscle strength and coordination, even sensation. Damage to this area of the CNS may produce a variety of neurological symptoms depending on the severity and types of illness.

How does a neck injury relate to MS?

The underlying cause of this debilitating disease is not clear, and scientists believe that MS is triggered by the combination of factors such as environmental, genetic, immunologic, and/or infectious. Although there is no specific cure for MS, there is a natural way to benefit greatly for those who suffer from MS.

Upper Cervical Research has demonstrated a strong link between the MS and upper cervical spine. A study published in 2005 revealed that MS patients had a history of neck injury. Dr. Erin Elster, an Upper Cervical chiropractor, showed that the correction of the upper cervical injury may reverse the progression of multiple sclerosis. According to Dr. Elster’s report in The Journals of Vertebral Subluxation Research stated, “head and neck injuries have long been considered a cause of multiple sclerosis, but this is the first research to show that the correction of those injuries can have dramatic effects on reversing MS.”
