Pediatric Headaches

October 26, 2022

The occurrence of headaches in children is on the rise and has been rising for many years. We are also seeing them occur in much younger children—toddlers and pre-school and that used to be a rare occurrence. Pediatric headaches are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the state of health of our children. Judy Converse, MPH, RD, LD, states in a VRAN newsletter that for the first time in history, U.S children are sicker than the generation before them. Children are not just a little worse off, they are precipitously worse off physically, emotionally, educationally and developmentally.

There are 4 basic things that have contributed to vertebral subluxation (spinal misalignment) in children.

1. Modern Birth Process in which births are planned and often induced which means an increase in extraction and delivery forces.
2. An increased sedentary lifestyle, especially with modern media, video games, etc.
3. Year around organized youth sports with little diversity, overuse injuries, and the constant repetitive stress on the frame of the human body, especially one that is still growing and developing,
4. The use of hand-held mobile devices.

Children with frequent headaches may suffer more in some respects than children with more physically devastating conditions like cancer and arthritis.

We often hear from our patients that their 15 year old daughter is a competitive gymnast, and she sees her teammates gather in the locker before  practice, and each will take a handful of aspirin before and after practice in order to deal with the chronic headaches they are experiencing.
