Concussion, Head Trauma, Headache, Head Pain, Post-Concussion Syndrome, Post Concussion Syndrome, Post - Concussion Syndrome, Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, MTBJWhen most people hear the term concussion, they usually think about hitting the head. While that is a part of what happens, one may not realize that the damage also occurs to the bones in the neck. The C1 and C2 vertebrae are particularly susceptible to damage because of their range of motion. If either of these bones moves out of place, it may impact the function of the nervous system by placing undue pressure on the brainstem. The concussion, also called a mild traumatic brain injury, may start out as minor, but if not treated correctly and promptly the following symptoms can begin to occur:

  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Amnesia
  • Confusion
  • Sensitivity to light and sound
  • Brain fog
  • Depression

It may be surprising to learn that these symptoms do not always begin to occur right after the trauma. Sometimes it may be weeks, months, or even years before they start. This is often referred to as PCS or post-concussion syndrome. Another interesting point to remember is that one does not have to be knocked unconscious to be diagnosed with a concussion.

The Children’s Medical Center in Ohio stated that out of all the children in the age range of 5 to 18 who seek care for a concussion at the emergency room, 29% of them would continue to develop PCS after they are released.  Dr. R. Cantu identifies four categories that symptoms of a concussion fall into in his book Concussion and Our Kids. These are:

  • Sleep disturbance
  • Emotional (affecting mood)
  • Cognitive (affecting mental function)
  • Somatic (physical effects)
