Parkinsons, Upper Cervical, Spinal misalignmentsMore on Three Sports Greats

In last week’s blog, we talked about how boxing great Muhammed Ali, NHL Hall of Famer Forrest Gregg, and NBA legend Brian Grant of the Portland Trailblazers all suffered from Parkinson’s disease. The interesting thing is that though those three suffer from Parkinson’s Disease, none of them attribute their conditions to their chosen sport.

The reason for that is because of research in recent years that’s shown the definition of a new syndrome that provides hope for those who suffer from Parkinson’s Disease. This syndrome, which the medical communicate calls  Cranio-Cervical Syndrome is giving patients with Parkinson’s Disease answers. The FONAR UPRIGHT Multi-Position MRI allows patients to see damage associated with traumas they’ve suffered to the cervical spine.

Unfortunately, those accidents cause misalignments in the upper neck that result in either total or partial obstruction of CSF flow. Obstructions of the flow of cerebrospinal fluid then lead to brain changes, including CSF leaks and intracranial pressure.

Along with Parkinson’s Disease, it is also thought that these obstructions may also be a cause of Muliple Sclerosis, Alzheimer’s, ALS, Childhood Autism, and other neurodegenerative diseases.

A Symposium on Parkinson’s

A symposium was held last year in New York City to discuss the impact of these new findings.  The primary purpose of the symposium was to raise awareness of this syndrome in the medical community. They also identified the need to notify the thousands of current and former athletes within the “Contact Sports” community afflicted by this syndrome.  Symposium organizers stated ”that there now exists genuine hope going forward for their symptom-free (or dramatic symptom reduction) future lives.”

Though, in order to address this syndrome, it is important that an upper cervical chiropractor examine the patient’s upper cervical spine for any misalignments. A misalignment can be corrected with upper cervical chiropractic procedures, which are both safe and gentle and restore the brain’s ability to communicate with the body.

For those who played contact sports and have either been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, or any other neurodegenerative disease, as well as those who are not sure but may feel they need to get checked,  It is important that you allow an upper cervical chiropractor to examine your upper neck vertebrae as soon as possible.
