Concussion, Head Trauma, Headache, Head Pain, Post-Concussion Syndrome, Post Concussion SyndromeIt may be surprising to learn, but approximately 2 million Americans suffer a head injury annually. The majority of these are regarded as minor. If the injury produces a certain number of symptoms, then medical doctors will generally diagnose it as post-concussion syndrome. However, it is vital to realize that even if a person did not have major trauma, they could still be affected by the minor injury sustained. Just because there was no blood, no medical attention needed, and it did not cause major damage a person may still be suffering from a traumatic brain injury. Many times this is undetectable, but some symptoms that may be experienced, even many years after the accident, include:

  • Tingling and numbness in the limbs
  • Feeling dizzy or having vertigo
  • Pain in the neck area
  • Muscle tension
  • Irregular sleep patterns
  • Pain in the lower back
  • Problems with vision
  • New or different headaches and migraines
  • Feeling nauseous
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue
  • Moodiness
  • Speech disorders
  • Respiratory problems

Why are these symptoms the result of a head trauma? This is due to the fact that the brainstem can be damaged if a misalignment of the upper neck is a result of the trauma. Even minor accidents can cause the C1 or atlas bone to become misaligned. When this occurs undue pressure is placed on the brainstem hindering communication between the body and the brain.

The brainstem houses many of the control centers that are vital to body functions like swallowing, breathing, balance, digestion, moving, hearing, and many others. Therefore, it is clear to see how a small fender bender, a trip and fall, or any type of injury to the head and neck can be causing the above symptoms. What can be done?
