pregnant, back pain, sciaticaYour Child and Your Shifting Body

If you’re an expectant mother, congratulations! You have something to celebrate, but there will be days you won’t want to celebrate until you actually give birth. We understand that going through those nine months of pregnancy will come with times to rejoice and times to endure pain. We want to help you get through these next several months with as little pain as possible.

Though, we can’t help you with the delivery process (we’re sure you have a wonderful birthing coach), we want to provide you with some advice that will help you find relief from pain you may endure in the months leading up to your child’s birth. Your body needs to make room for that life growing inside of you, and that will cause certain organs to shift out of place and cause pain.

One of the most common conditions the shifting of your organs may cause is Sciatica. You have two sciatic nerves. Each one of them extends from your lower back, right below the uterus, to the bottom of your leg. Sciatica occurs when an undue pressure is forced against either your sciatic nerve or one of its five spinal nerve roots. That weight of your unborn child may be causing pain in your lower back, back of your thigh, legs, sole of your foot, or possible all of them.

We hope for a quick and easy delivery; though, in the mean time, we thought we’d give you some advice of things you can do to find some relief from your pain.

Sciatica Relief for Pregnant Women

  • Lie on your side, opposite your pain
  • Avoid heavy lifting
  • Don’t stand for long periods of time
  • Elevate your foot and rest it on something
  • Swim (Wade in shallow water)
  • Apply ice to the injured area

Your Child’s Birth and Upper Cervical Care

One of the most important aspects of preventing sciatica during pregnancy and other conditions is to have proper alignment in your spinal column. When your spine is in a balanced and normal position it will allow you to carry your baby as comfortably as possible. Twisting and turning of the spinal bones and pelvis can also lead to increased pain and discomfort during delivery. Upper cervical chiropractors are uniquely trained to provide long-lasting relief and prevention of sciatica and other conditions.

The upper cervical approach requires no twisting, popping or cracking. It is a gentle, scientific and precise approach to restore proper alignment to the spinal column for long lasting results.
